| In 1986 we planted Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Semillon on unimproved sheep paddocks. Since then the vineyard has grown and flourished.
In the early years grape crops were sold to other wineries, including Hanging Rock , Passing Clouds, Wildwood, and Penfolds. Before long, however, we decided to proceed with making our own wine, and winemaking facilities were established in the Old Newstead Co-operative Butter Factory, where we were joined by winemaking partners from two other small vineyards.
We opened the doors on the Queen's Birthday weekend of 1994, celebrating the occasion with a big party, a tradition we have continued each Queens Birthday weekend. Our partners have since moved on, but the Welshmans Reef Vineyard has continued to grow, and now having outgrown the facilities at the Butter Factory, have built a new winery and tasting room at the vineyard. .
All wine sold under the Welshmans Reef label is grown and made from estate grown fruit, however we now process fruit for a growing number of grape producers, from the local goldfields area to as far afield as Mildura and Robinvale and the Yarra Valley. |
