On the same steep hillsides where Cistercian monks of the famous Maulbronn monastery (an UNESCO World Heritage site) planted vineyards in the 12th century, the Fischer family has been growing varietal grapes for the award-winning wines of Weingut Sonnenhof for many years.
In old church books we found our ancestors listed as farmer and wine grower in the 1500's. Farming and wine growing have always been done together in our area, because the wine grapes grow so well here, explains Martin Fischer.
Due to the consistently dry warm climate in the Wuerttemberg wine region, 28 kilometers northwest of Stuttgart, the grapes on Weingut Sonnenhof’s south-sloping vineyards mature slowly and completely, yielding superbly balanced fruit of ripeness and acidity, focused flavours and aromas, which the Fischers preserve in each of their wines.
In addition to its ideal microclimate, Weingut Sonnenhof benefits from heavy alluvial soils, which engender their red wines with a distinctive undercurrent of earthy flavours.
Our steep hillsides and heavy soil stress the vines and reduces water intake. The results at harvest are grapes with not only more balance and sugar concentration, but also more complex flavours.
Martin Fischer adds that “Weingut” in our name indicates that we grow all the grapes in our wines ourselves. In addition, all our wine labels are stamped with the word "Gutsabfüllung," which, like the French “mis en bouteille au chateau”, means that the we bottled it at our winery, just down the hill from our ancient vineyards.
