A new wine estate with wines from top Saar vineyard sites
VOLS is launching its own wines
VOLS, a small winery with old family-owned vineyards on the best southern facing slopes has been launched in Wiltingen, one of the best wine villages on the Saar river.
For several years, the committed wine maker Helmut Plunien has experimented in these vineyards in order to produce best wines from mostly ungrafted vines. The extremely fruity and concentrated wines from the Saar river, that have been served and enjoyed all over the world for centuries, are sold in the traditionally dark and slender bottles.
VOLS’ philosophy of wine making is simple: the world best wines can be produced only from the best fruit from best vineyard sites and with utter dedication. The low per hectare yields of old vineyards result in highly concentrated musts. A fermentation relying on natural yeasts and a careful vinification guarantee unique and long-lasting wines.
• Wine Quality
The style of VOLS wines is distinct. It reflects our own two decade-long experience as well as results from numerous conversations with wine experts, aficionados and famous wine makers from all over the world. In order to highlight the original fruity and clear style of Saar wines we go back to the roots of wine making on the Saar. All fruit stems from the lower Saar river and is harvested late, at their optimal stage of ripeness.
The distinctive traits of these classical Saar wines are:
• great varietal expression and intensely fruity notes
• structure and long-lingering taste
• freshness and vivid acidity at the palate
• potential for storage and maturity
• full body with low alcohol
• elegance and grace
• “wines that make you excited”
• Bottle
The heavy, dark, antique-green bottle with its turquoise-blue reflections conveys our connectivity to old traditions. Saar wines have been filled into these bottles for centuries. The bottle type will again ensure the unique brand recognition with wine experts.
• Closures
According to the old-fashioned way, we close VOLS wines with extra-long, hand-picked natural corks. Each year we visit the forests of Alentajo in Portugal and personally select the best corks. We can therefore guarantee highest standards for all of our closures.
VOLS offers to re-cork each wine after 25 years. At that occasion we will sample the wines and add our tasting notes to each bottle.
• Layout
The extraordinary and first-class layout of our wines accentuates the base of VOLS wines, i.e., the slaty vineyard soils. Plain elegance reflects our straightforward production philosophy. Deliberately, we do not mention either vineyard site names or legal predicates such as spatlese or auslese.
• Availability
Depending on the wines’ developments we will release our wines not before June of the year following the harvest. Since our small production is sold out very quickly we offer the possibility to buy futures.
VOLS reserves the right to cancel its entire production in mediocre vintages.
• Portfolio
VOLS offers two wines:
o VOLS I
Coming from our top vineyard site, adjacent to the Scharzhofberg, this is the best VOLS wine. The soils consists of partially weathered Devon slates, ferrous oxides that cause the soil’s brownish appearance, blue slates, and a base of quartzites.
Futures: by 31.01. following the harvest a discount of 10%
o VOLS II
Southern-sloping hills with blue, weathered Devon slates guarantee optimal conditions for our 40+ year old vines.
Futures: by 31.01. following the harvest a discount of 10%
