There have always been vineyards here, where great wines are made. Perhaps that's why some say the name "Franciacorta" comes from "Petite France", the nickname given to it by Charlemagne! But the name is more likely to derive from "curtes francae", a Medieval monastic court which enjoyed special franchises. Today, the term "Franciacorta" describes a geographical area, a wine and a production method. This area is outstandingly well-suited to winegrowing due to a combination of factors: the fertile soil, rich in minerals and well-drained thanks to the components of sand, silt and stones from thousands of years of glaciation; the airy, temperate climate; and last but not least, the varied, rolling and breathtakingly beautiful landscape. The wines made in this area, which are some of the best in Italy, obtained DOC status in 1967 and subsequently DOCG with more careful zoning: the DOC Terre di Franciacorta went to the white and red wines while the DOCG Franciacorta was reserved far those which undergo a second fermentation in the bottles. In 1995 the first and only Italian DOCG Brut was created, with obligatory natural second fermentation in the bottles. THE ESTATE The Montenisa estate is situated in the heart of Franciacorta around the village of Calino, south of the lake of Iseo. The grape varieties grown in the estate's 60 hectares of vineyards are those traditionally considered most suitable for the production of Franciacorta wine: Chardonnay, Pinot Nero and Pinot Bianco. The estate's classic vineyards are situated on the hill of Santo Stefano and their excellent, intensely fragrant grapes give the wine body and balance. The most recently planted vineyards, in a plot of land surrounded by a wall, locally known as “brolo”, were created in order to grow great grapes for a great wine. The vinification and ageing cellars are located under the porticoes around the buildings of Tenuta di Montenisa. Remuage is still carried out by hand in the old traditional way using typical pupitres (trestle tables), and every single bottle is given careful attention. All these factors combine to ensure full expression of all the land's rich potential.
