Contact: | Andrea Ferrari, Francesco Frati |
The mission of Andrea Ferrari, the man who founded Monte delle Vigne in 1983, has always been clear-cut: to produce wines, on the hills of Ozzano (Parma), that would express the natural terroir of the land, while combining tradition and innovation in an oenological style that would gradually mark a new trend for wine production in the area.
Monte delle Vigne winery is located on the right side of the Taro river, at altitudes between 200 and 300 meters, 20 km out of Parma, Italy and surrounded by the Taro Natural Park and Boschi di Carrega Natural Park.
In the early ’90s, Ferrari’s idea took tangible shape in Nabucco, still the flagship wine of the company today: a still, well-structured red made with autochthonous grapes (Barbera and Merlot), aged for a year in French oak barriques and then for a further 12 months in bottles.
Nabucco is followed by the still white Callas (from 100% Malvasia grapes) and Monte delle Vigne Rosso, also vinified still. Nabucco and Callas consistently rank among the best Italian wines.
The great turning point for the company arrived in 2004. An important entrepreneur, Paolo Pizzarotti, joined forces with Andrea Ferrari, strengthening the company with his magnificently exposed, adjoining estate, covering 150 hectares.
With this change, new high density vineyards were planted, at a rate of ten hectares per year: in 2009 Monte delle Vigne has reached a total surface area of 60 hectares.
A new winery was built at the centre of the estate, an important project that combines avant-garde architecture with more advanced vinification techniques, sized to comfortably accommodate all the grapes produced and to enable their processing with natural techniques that fully respect the raw materials.
Hypogean, with a gravity pressing system, it has a barrique cellar that can house up to 700 barriques and a fully automatic bottling plant that guarantees a high level of quality, even in the final processing phase.
